Stewart Duthie

Manager, Subsea Technology, Flexlife

Stewart Duthie is Director, Subsea Technology with niche flexible pipe specialists Flexlife having been with the company since its early days in 2009 and during this time he has gained first hand experience of the challenges which many SME’s face in exporting widely with limited resources.

During 2018 Flexlife’s business was 82% export led with projects carried out in the Americas, Europe, W Africa, India, SE Asia and Australasia.

Each of these regions presents its own unique commercial and cultural challenges and Stewart has exporting knowledge particularly in Malaysia, Angola & Nigeria. Scottish Enterprise has been a valuable supporter of the company’s internationalisation strategy.

The Flexlife export approach relies heavily on trusted local partners and the company looks for synergies where the cross pollination of services mutually benefits the partnership. This approach facilitates the expansion of service expertise without diluting the core expertise of each organisation.

This approach has been particularly relevant in W Africa where local partners have been able to offer ROV services and control system expertise to the mutual benefit of the enterprise. However, it would be simplistic to believe that the road to internationalisation is simple and Flexlife has had challenges in this pathway too.

Managing Director, Pyropress

Pyropress is a leading UK based designer and manufacturer of weatherproof and ATEX/IECEx certified switches and transmitters, for use in explosive, hazardous and harsh industrial environments. It has a strong portfolio of products addressing the needs of process industries requiring hazardous area protection and the capacity to withstand harsh situations, such as oil and gas, power generation, waste-water treatment, nuclear etc.

Export to new markets is a major focus to achieve growth and a distribution model is followed. The approach is to seek established product sale, promotion and distribution companies, selling complementary products into similar markets.

For a small business, distributors provide an efficient ‘pay-as-you-go’ sales resource, with payment made in the form of discounts off list prices. Using distributors has many benefits including simplified transactions in overseas territories, by giving just one account to manage.

Pyropress has used the support of the Department for International Trade in locating suitable companies to provide representation, with services such as ‘OMIS’ and ‘Expand Your Global Reach’ programmes. The proportion of sales from export markets continues to grow, which gives greater resilience to regional market fluctuations.
